WELCOME TO THE GOLDEN LIONS ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB

The Shelby High School Athletic Booster Club is founded for the sole purpose of providing support, both financial and physical, to the total athletic program at Shelby High School. The support of individual or non-school sponsored activities is not provided by the organization.

Tradition cuts across all Shelby High Athletics

by Alan Ford

Success is intertwined with Shelby High’s athletic legacy. Just walk in Blanton Memorial Stadium or Lloyd Little Gym and check out the banners for all sports. That tradition manifests itself most notably on the football field: Since 1910 the Golden Lions have accumulated more victories (824) than any program in North Carolina. The warriors in the golden helmets have earned an amazing 18 state championships (NCHSAA and WNCHSAA).

Yet winning alone, as much as the Golden Lions have dominated certain sports, doesn’t solely account for why the athletic program is so respected. Every school or athletic administrator at Shelby has insisted on a high level of integrity from Shelby student/athletes and their coaches. The importance of being outstanding representatives of the school and town they represent has been stressed through the decades. That includes sportsmanship, behavior of players and fans, and offering courtesy to opposing teams, especially when they visit the Shelby High campus.

But there is so much more that has generated pride in Shelby High athletics.

State team champions in boys and girls soccer, swimming, baseball, boys basketball, track as well as boys and girls tennis are also a major part of the story. That also doesn’t cover the individual state champs to emerge in everything from wrestling to swimming, tennis and track.

Factor in the presence of legendary coaches across such a wide range of sporting activities – from Casey Morris and Lloyd Little to Chris Norman and David Steeves. Add in the triumphs of Art Moss, Pearley Allen, Jim Taylor, George Hall, Cal Pass, Burney Drake and the list appears endless.

Conference championships, regional crowns, Player and Coaches of the Year awards – Shelby has a record few if any can match. It shows up every year when countless Golden Lion students sign with colleges at all every level to continue their pursuit of sports excellence. Shrine Bowl, all-state selections and athletes being chosen for all-star competition are regular happenings

Athletes/coaches of reknown have been produced by the Shelby program for the last half century. That includes the alumni success stories of Alvin Gentry (NBA), Charlotte Smith (college basketball), Chad Holbrook (college baseball), Don Patrick and Lance Ware at the high school level and NFL coaches Jim and Jeremiah Washburn.
